Rat Pest Control Wellington

Rats are nocturnal (active at night) and exist closely with man. Humans create the ideal environment for Rats by providing a constant source of food, water, warmth and shelter. They are prolific breeders, producing up to 8 litters (4-6 young per litter) each year.

Rats are called communal or social pests. This means they live in family groups… where there is one there are more!

They spread serious diseases, including salmonellosis (food poisoning), plague, leptospiros and rickettsial pox. Rats carry ticks, fleas and other ectoparasites, continually gnaw on wiring and ducting causing expensive damage to buildings, and cause a great deal of anxiety for occupants of infested buildings.

Rat Control: The Best Methods

01.
Baiting.

Usually baiting is the most cost effective and thorough way to deal with a Rat problem. When using bait, it is important to select the right bait for the job, place bait where Rats travel, place enough bait to get rid of the problem and use tamper-proof bait stations where safety is a concern.

02.
Non-toxic approach.

There are countless deterrent and repellent products out there. It has been proven the sonic, ultrasound, odour and scaring products have very limited effectiveness against Rats and Mice. Where baits are not allowed, or if it is suspected there is only a very small Rat population, there are snap and mechanical traps that are an economical, easy to use, and usually effective way to capture Rats.

03.
Exit Pest

Getting rid of a Rat infestation is more than setting out a few baits or traps. It is important to understand their biology and behaviour. Professional eradication typically encompasses four major tasks:

  1. Inspection of premises and species identification.
  2. Appropriate baiting and/or trapping.
  3. Advice on harborage reduction, potential entry points and proofing of building.
  4. Monitoring and maintenance baiting.

Each step is important to the overall success of eradicating a Rat infestation and making sure the problem is solved in the long term.
